How many scopes are provided by Maven? ›

Maven distinguishes six dependency scopes: compile, runtime, test, provided, system and import. The compile scope contains dependencies that are required for the compilation of the project under development.

test. This scope indicates that the dependency is not required for normal use of the application, and is only available for the test compilation and execution phases.

compile This is the default scope, used if none is specified. Compile dependencies are available in all classpaths of a project. Furthermore, those dependencies are propagated to dependent projects.

Provided: This scope is used when the dependency is provided by the target runtime environment or container and is not needed at compile time. Runtime: This scope is used when the dependency is needed at runtime but not at compile time.

Gradle allows custom dependency scopes, which provides better-modeled and faster builds. Maven dependency conflict resolution works with a shortest path, which is impacted by declaration ordering. Gradle does full conflict resolution, selecting the highest version of a dependency found in the graph.
